BRIEF HISTORY OF HOME SCIENCE DEPARTMENT:         

The Department of Home Science was established in the year 1962-63. Initially the department has offered the course in both Intermediate and Under Graduation levels. But now only UG  course is offered. The curriculum was formulated to suit the needs of both urban as well as rural girl students. The department of Home Science has touched a significant milestone in 2013, by completing fifty glorious years of fruitful functioning and it is functioning with pronounced academic spirit, and extension might. The present strength of the department is 69 as against the sanctioned strength of 90. Faculty members of the department keep abreast of the latest developments in their respective field of study by attending Seminars, Workshops and Refresher courses. They act as subject experts, resource persons, and consultants for various Government and Non Government Organisations. The alumni of the department are settled in versatile professions such as CDPOs, Extension Officers, Dieticians, Preschool Managers, Interior Designers, apparel designers, community coordinators for development programmes , Quality Control Officers in Food Industries etc. Some of the alumni have grown into entrepreneurs . Some of the Alumni are also acted  as the members of the College Planning and Development Committee and Internal Quality Assurance Cell.


Our Vission To impart knowledge, skills and competencies for the empowerment of girl students and thus contribute for a healthy family and society.

Our Mission The mission of the department is to equip, enable and empower young women  in rural and urban households through teaching and extension activities which will help to construct healthy society and mark  their significance at national and international level.

Courses Offered in B.Sc Home Science:

               B.Sc Home Science is a course that gives students exposure to real life situations and skills required to play their active role in building up of a healthy family and society as informed citizens. The course is designed to train the students to increase professional skills, develop insights into home and family living and enter a wide range of career options. The Under Graduation course provides an opportunity for the students to pursue  higher studies in broader disciplines of Home Science like Foods and Nutrition, Child Development,  Home Management, Clothing and Textiles and Extension Education, Psychology, Microbiology, Bio Chemistry.

A pass in Intermediate examination with Arts and Sciences and Vocational Course CGDM

The department is well established with three class rooms, one staff room, Nutrition Laboratory,Department Library and other necessary equipments to conduct practical sessions.

 Recent activities:

  • SWASTHYA VIDYA VAHINI: It is the programme of health education in rural areas through Medical,Nursing and Homescience students.The entire programme covers 10 themes.1st,2nd,3rd Bsc students are participated in the programme from December 2016 to December 2017.
  • Conducted 10 day awareness cum orientation programme on Health,Hygiene and \Nutrition for 9th class students at municipal girls high school, Kakinada.
  • Conducted dental check up for all teaching and non teaching staff with the support of Dentys , Kakinada.
  • Two daystudytour was organized and visited Y.S.R HORTICULTURAL UNIVERSITY,KVK,Venkataramannagudem,West Godavari Dist.
  • The department of Home Science conducted a study project i.e To study blood pressure levels of both teaching and non teaching staff of  A.S.D. Government Degree College for women.
  • Conducted dental check up for all teaching and non teaching staff with the support of Dentys , Kakinada.
  • Study project on Assessment of nutritional status for 9th class students by Anthropometric method.
  • Conducted five day programme collaboration with JCI,Kakinada on different activities like guest lecture,dental checkup,felicitation,cultural programmes and awareness on eye donation.
  • Conducted two day workshop on screen printing as skill development programme.
  • Conducts JAM sessions.
  • 45 days certificate course in tailoring.
  •  As a part of skill development programme conducted One day workshop on bag making with the support of KRISHI VIGNANA KENDRA,Undi.
  • Organized exhibition on handicrafts.
  • As a part of extension activity conducted 10 day awareness cum orientation programme on Nutrition Health and Hygiene for 5th class students at municipal girls high school.
  • Conducted 3 day training programme on personality development with JCI collaboration.
  • Study project on blood group and its relation to disease proneness among 1st year degree students.
  • Study project on study the prevalence of Anaemia  by testing Hb levels of final year degree students and impart necessary dietary counselling.
  • Organized two months certificate course on hand embroidery.
  • Conducted 25 days certificate course on garment making and fabric painting.
  • Four staff members and few students registered in MOOCS(8 weeks) certificate course.
  • Conducted CHETANA exhibition cum sale.
  • Visit to DEEPTHI INSTITUTE OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT ,Kakinada.
  • Visited JNTU(K) Food technology and Food processing units.
  • Five students of final BSc participated in Maguva telsuko programme.
  • As a part of nutrition week celebrations the department of homescience conducted an awareness programme on Anaemia at Uppada with the support of G.M.R VARALAKSHMI FOUNDATION.
  • Seven students of 1st Bsc participated in KISHORI VIKASAM PROGRAMME organized by SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAAN.
