DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
DEPARTMENT PROFILE
Brief History of the Department (History and Brief activities taken up by the Department)
Chemistry department is one of the oldest departments of A.S.D.Govt.Degree College for women, Kakinda established in the year 1963.
In 1968, the Devasthanam handed over the college to the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It was admitted to clauses 2F & 12B of U.G.C act with effect from 17-06-1972. A.S.D.Govt.Degree College functioned as a composite institution till 1996. Many Intermediate students got ranks in Entrance examinations for Professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture B.Sc and B.Pharmacy etc.
Later in tune with the policy of U.G.C. – The Government of Andhra Pradesh has bifurcated this institution into Junior and Degree colleges in 1996. Since then the chemistry department is handling only degree level teaching.
Out of five posts, at present three regular staff members having M.Sc. qualification, NET with research experience and one guest faculty are working in the department. The conventional courses we offer in B.Sc. are
1. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in Telugu medium.
2. Chemistry, Botany, Zoology combination in Telugu medium.
3. Chemistry, Botany and Microbiology in Telugu medium.
4. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in English medium.
5. Chemistry, Botany, Zoology combination in English medium.
6. Chemistry, Botany, Horticulture combination in English medium.
During this academic year 237 students are studying in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of B.Sc. courses (104+71+62=237). About 36.2 % of girls belong to S.C., 10.8% of S.T., 36 % of backward classes. As this happens to be a government institution, every year more or less the same composition of students are studying at this institution. During this year the cut of mark for admission at the entry level is 35 % for all the courses respectively.
Teaching Practices
Every year we prepare the academic plan for theory as well as practical and every staff member will follow this plan for the completion of the syllabus on time.
The department of chemistry also handles few classes for the students of C.B.Z. and C.B.MB to explain fundamentals of Mathematical topics like Differentiation, Partial differentiation and Integration etc. In addition to regular teaching, seminars, assignment, slip tests, group discussions, quiz programs are the other methods of teaching practices. For better understanding of some of the topics in chemistry, Models, Bio-Visual charts are utilized. For some of the topics presentation is being done through O.H.P, L.C.D following C.C.E norms.
Guest Lectures
Guest and extension lectures are regularly arranged every year. The department is planning to have linkages with NFCL, Kakinda and REGENCY Ceramics Company Ltd, Yanam, Dr.Reddy’s labs for placement for the students.
After admissions students are assessed in the classes by putting questions on the topics of qualifying examination. During the course of the program, continuous evaluation is done by conducting tests and giving assignments. Question banks and a number of model papers are made available to the students in the department library for ready reference.
Teacher counseling system is of immense use in knowing the background of the students so as to enable the extended support to academically and sometimes financially poor students. Most of our staff members act as counselors and meet at least once in a month with the parents of their wards and the progress of the students is clearly explained. After knowing the performance of the students in slip tests, the low achievers are identified and remedial coaching classes are conducted outside the college hours. The teacher counselors if necessary will be dealing with the students in groups or at times individually to know their personal problems and help them to sort out their problems.
The maintenance of laboratories, ordering for the required equipment and chemicals is being done regularly with the help of the committee, which is constituted in the beginning of the academic year. This committee consists of senior lecturer and student representatives. Academic review meetings, departmental activities, guest lecture programs, seminars, field trips are the most important activities which are thoroughly discussed by the staff and planned for academic year.
Department library is equipped with all modern books, which are useful to the students. The library caters to the needs of poor students who cannot afford to buy their own books.
